Footprints of a Pilgrimage
remembering....praising....praying....

PILGRIMAGE is a spiritual journey in company with God’s people at prayer. It is a holy excursion one takes in a spirit of reflection, wonder, penance, and devotion. This pilgrimage can give glory and honor to God as one visits with others and reflects upon the life lived out at places made holy by God’s friends.
A fruit of a pilgrimage is a personal decision to make whatever change necessary, with the help of God, to become all that God intended for us at creation. Make your intentions as you step back in history and experience God’s Divine Providence in the lives of his people through the footsteps of Mother Mary Lange!

Plan a narrated, directed pilgrimage for your group:
Contact the Guild Office at least two (2) months in advance. Have two (2) possible dates for your pilgrimage to discuss when calling for reservations. 410-242-6861. Fax: 410-247-5172.

A Pilgrimage is a prayerful excursion one takes in a spirit of presence and reflection, A pilgrimage gives honor and glory to God as one reflects upon the life lived and actions performed at places made holy by God’s servants (friends). The fruit of a pilgrimage is a personal decision to make whatever change necessary with the help of God, to become all that God intended for us at creation.   Mindful that we all journey to God the Father through Christ we are often helped along the way by some of his friends.

People have come from all over to walk in the footsteps of Mother Lange and the early Oblate Sisters. Local pilgrims, pilgrims from New York New Jersey, North Carolina, Chicago, and Virginia, to name just a few.

Pilgrims speak of being inspired by Mother Lange’s vision and determination. They attest to the expansion of their own faith as they pray to God through the intercession of God’s Servant. They mention the vibrations felt of her strength and grow through the experience of the history of her era.

On a pilgrimage, as one steps back in history and experience God’s divine Providence in the lives of his people, we are helped to become a new creation. What God has done for Mother Mary Lange, he will do for each of us.

 1. Mount Providence Convent

Mother Mary Lange never actually set foot on this site, yet almost 2 centuries later, this motherhouse and headquarters of the Oblate Sisters of Providence exudes her spirit and charism. This is the hub from which spread the spiritual and corporal works of mercy offered by Mother Mary’s daughters. At this site, the Chapel windows tell the Oblate story. In the exhibit room, Mother Mary Lange and Father James H. Joubert’s authentic, personal artifacts and memorabilia can be viewed.

2. Mother Mary Lange’s Gravesite

“Show me a valiant woman…” Pray at the tomb wherein lies the earthly remains of Mother Mary Lange and those women who answered the Lord’s call to serve. Leave at her resting place the petitions of your heart. O God, glorify your heart by granting favors through the inter- cession of your faithful servant, Mother Mary Lange.

3. Chapelle Basse

Visit the lower chapel of old St. Mary’s Seminary on Paca Street.  This was the “parish church” of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. John Neumann, C.Ss.R., Mother Mary Lange, the early sisters (including one of the co-founders, Theresa Duchemin who later withdrew from the Oblate community and, as Mother Theresa Maxis, became foundress and first superior of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (I.H.M.).  In this chapel, Mother Mary and the early sisters worshipped, taught religion and followed the spirit’s call to give of herself and her own money to educate “children of color”.

4. St.Frances Academy.

Begun in 1828, this is the oldest continuing black Catholic institution of learning. On the second floor is the Mother Mary Lange Room, with exhibits and an area preserved as she would have used it, looking out its windows. This site is where she lived, worked, prayed, and gave up her soul to God (February 3, 1882). Visit and pray at this site made holy by a woman of humility, courage, holiness and an extraordinary sense of service to the poor and the sick. “By the fruit the tree is known.” Mother Mary lives on as St. Frances Academy continues her legacy to youth.
